The World Editor² is an application for editing and creating world maps for scenarios.
Files created/saved are .rdu type , the only format which is recognized by Anno 1404 game.
You can download the tool application (its 2in1 = WorldEditor+ToolOne) from here (redirect link to the Downloads page - you must be logged in to view it)(for Anno 1404 with Venice Addon or Anno 1404 without addon , the 15,x MB file is with Venice addon and it is the last version).The installing setup is in German but dont worry the application is in english 100%.
Just hit the middle button and aplication will create a start menu icon and it will install on game location.When its done it will display "fertig stellen" that mean Finish.You can create a desktop shortcut of application by right click on WorldEditor - Addon from Start menu .(if you want a faster shortcut)Select to start WorldEditor - Addon from all programs start and confirm Terms use.
Colors used on guide :
Light blue : Chapter, number,important/next step.
Yellow : What you have to do,important.
Red : Very important notes , do not miss it,keep in mind.
Green : Important good tips or what you can do ,but you dont have to apply it,your choice.
Normal : Normal descriptions of what you have to do, definitions.
Important notes :
1.WorldEditor² and ToolOne may not work with DOD-Dawn of Discovery (US version of Anno 1404 game)
2.Maps/scenarios created with WorldEditor² and ToolOne ADDON version application tool may not work on normal game Anno 1404 game without Venice Addon.
WorlEditor2 creates ONLY maps and islands/resources (take it as a geographical application) and can not modify or unlock Espionage,City Council,Economy,Politics...for these use ToolOne.4.It is posible that the map created cant be seen in game when you start unless you discover world (navigate or buy a map discover item from Garibaldi - 150 honour).If you want to have Discovered World already from start you need ToolOne application and set Discover World to True.
Map Editor and ToolOne doesnt install shortcuts on your desktop , to start you have to look for it (My examples/images are for Windows XP because im a XP user atm.) on your deskop,down on left corner select Start then All Programs and search it on the list :
The location of app. in Start/All Programs is (in drive C always)- All Users or your administrator folder depends what you selected when you installed:
Why should create a 2nd shorcut in Start location and drag and drop it to desktop ? Because if you dont use it for 2 months or so, computer will delete old,unused shortcuts from desktop and you might need to reinstal it to get your start icon again for programs.
Note: If you try to create a shortcut of the .exe file you might not get a fully operational link..I mean you will get the map Editor but with Addons islands invisible.
(This can be applied to ToolOne too)
To create a new map you have 2 options : New map or New random map.
Select only one.(In our case at beggining of guide ,select New map..)
New map = Allow you to build your own map with islands added 1 by 1 from islands database.
New random map = The computer will create a random map with random islands,random fertilities and will add even Neutral Islands/Buildings (Example:Venice/Black Castle) for you ,according to some presets asked by computer.
A message will pop-up and will ask you to confirm some settings.
A. Set the world size.
Size = The size of world map.You can resize the map whenever you want.
B. Set a name for your map. (Let's say "my world1")
Name = The name for your maps.
C. Write a description for your map.
Description = Description of your map/scenario.It will be displayed after you select your map to be loaded on game,on scenarios screen.
D. Browse a image for your map.
Preview image = Browse/Remove a image (.bmp, .jpg, .png type) for your map and it will be used as an avatar image on scenarios select screen from game.The size will be autoresized to see it but it is posible to keep the real size on file as document in kb or mb.The avatar image is a bit bigger than the visible size from this setting menu.So browsing a image a bit bigger as visible size bigger than the setting visible size is a good idea,the avatar will be displayed on better resolution performance if you wish.Anyway its not a big difference size on in game scenario selecting screen.If you dont upload a image for avatar, will be displayed as avatar your map with visible islands on smaller visible size.
E. Set the difficulty for your map/scenario.
Difficulty = It is the difficulty of your map or scenario.It will be displayed on scenario selecting screen by stars.
easy=1 star, medium= 2 stars , hard= 3 stars.
This setting is final even if you open the map with ToolOne and create quests,items...and it applies to islands dificulty,how many resources will be generated on each resource stock or numbers of resources generated by computer on each island,or the fertility , when you add islands to your map.On new random map..choice you have to set Island difficulty(size),resources,Fertilities each but here we have only difficulty.
Note: Difficulty does not apply to Artificial Intelligence players,quests,espionage,disasters..etc , it refer only to islands resources ,fertility generated by computer when we add islands.
F. Select your light for map.
Light= Drop-down menus for the northern and southern map area, with predetermined lighting settings which can be selected (North can be upper section of map and South for lower section of the map OR you can set Nordic civilization/islands area on left and South civilization/islands on the right size , its your choice).This is a general light setting and it applies to each island too if you dont set lights for each island.If you let the box empty computer will select light by default.
When you work with WorldEditor you must learn to visualise your map and always to know the real position of your map/island.Turn your view point anti-clockwise 45 degree and look at your map, you will know how it look in game , on minimap or big map.Looking at the screenshot below , you will know how it works the map area.
As you can see, you'll add your islands only in on lightened blue area.If you want to add more islands for far landscapes ,do it on your own , i dont know if it will work or if you need to send a ship on treasure expedition , the ship might get stuck , oh and i think you'll load RAM memory with useless information...
You can zoom your map using mouse wheel
Add players (human and computer)
On the top right corner you can see Drop-down menus to choose your players.First must be set on human player.Click on those coloured small squares to set colors for each player.
Now it is time to add your first island
Press the + button on the menu bar or press CTRL+I,a window will appear with all the islands available in ANNO 1404.The main window will show a preview of the currently selected island.
As you can see there alot short code names for islands:
n_l01......n_lxx = north large island number 1...xx
n_m01....n_mxx = north medium island number 1...xx
n_s01.....n_sxx = north small island number 1....xx
n_start01...n_start03 = north starter game of your ship and the island of Lord Richard Northburgh
n_xl01....nxlxx = north large 'dummy' uninhabited island.Can be used for quests or landscape.No fertility,no one can settle this.
n_xm01...n_xmxx = north medium 'dummy' uninhabited island.Can be used for quests or landscape.No fertility,no one can settle this.
n_xs01...n_xsxx = north small 'dummy' uninhabitated island.Can be used for quests or landscape.No fertility,no one can settle this.
n_shipspawnpoint = virtual location for quests with ships only.Ships for quests..Destroy fleet,damaged ships,fleeing enemy trading or warships which sail random on map will spawn on these virtual locations.(add it near a dummy island or near a normal island)
n_volcano01...05 = volcano islands
n_ven01..03 = Venice island of Giacomo Garibaldi.
s_l--,s_m--,s_s-.... same definitions except is for South islands
s_start01...03 = The island Al Zahir
s_cor01..03 = The Corsair island, island of Hassan ben Sahid
After you added an island, or click on an island, it will be shown(outlined) with a yellow frame.
-You can move it by drag and drop option(same as any file on applications).
-You can rotate it too using the rotate buttons.
-You can delete an island when is selected if you hit DELETE key on your keyboard
Note : Al Zahir,Lord Richard Northburgh,Giacomo Garibaldi,Hassan ben Sahid must have their own islands and only 1 in game(per each)
(we will talk about Neutral islands at point 5)
Add fertilities on your island(s)
Maximum fertilities on each island allowed/generated randomly is (north or south) :
Large islands = 3 Fertility types + 1 Wildcard
Medium islands = 3 Fertility types + 1 Wildcard
Small islands = 2 Fertility types + 1 Wildcard
note: You can use Random Fertility+Resource button - its much much faster.You can edit/modify each fertilty.
You can set the Wildcard to 0 (nul) and add another fertily.Remember to use the allowed number of fertilty types for each island.If you add more than maximum allowed per island type,your extra fertily will not be displayed on game , so its useless to set 5 or 7 or 10 fertilities.
Island types :
Regular = Resource island (island flagged by game as production and resources island)
Main island = Population starter ( island flagged by game as main starter profile with population)
Occident/Orient Harbour start islands = The islands of Lord Richard Northburgh (occident) and Al Zahir (orient)
Corsair island = The island of Hassan ben Sahid
Decoration island = ('Dummy') Uninhabited islands, islands used by game for quests too.
Venetian island = The island of Giacomo Garibaldi
Volcano island = the island with volcano , and also the only island in game where CUSTOM RESOURCES (mines + items) works.
Light = You can set a specific ambient light of island and color of water around of that island.Letting that empty will be set as default also game will use the light from the main light setting for North or South set by you when you started map.
Wildcard = A free slot available for other fertilities to be placed on an island with a item socketed on warehouse item slot.
Add Neutral powers (Third Party Slot)
Some islands have a Neutral Power , a building whit someone who live on the island that the player can interact with helping the player and provide goods,armies,items,quests. This is done by setting up a market building or warehouse to bring the location under the influence of the player and then building a road from the warehouse or market building to the entrance of the location.Empty third party slots are shown as blue.Filled third party slots are shown in green.By double clicking an empty third party slot you can enter in the type of third party to be displayed on the island.
Third party slots or neutral powers are :
1.Montain Monastery Slot = Brother Hilarius which provides goods (for money) and quests (very useful on game start with tools)
2.Old Tree Slot = Hekata which protect your island from disease if you can constantly deliver herbs (very useful if it is ONLY on your island with population - her effect may not apply to your other islands with or without population, you must have population on her island in order to get results.Might not apply to computer players if they own her island only rare by chance).Hekata give you quests too.
3.Celtic Tomb(Excavation Site) Slot = Cuno von Rembold , a treasure hunter which will dig all day for treasures for you if you can provide goods as he request.He will get you items randomly; common,rare or very rare types according to ypour civilization level and goods provided.(very useful on patricians level even if his items are great quality or not, you can exchange them in order to get Honour points , needed to items/ships purchase from Neutral Islands).May not apply to others computers players only if it is enabled for this on ToolOne or by a game scenario.CAN BE ENABLED with ToolOne for each CP to have access to his items if CP its in his influence area..Cuno will give you quests too.
4.Black Castle Slot = Barnabas will create for you armies in exchange of money, beer,weapons (very useful if you play with 2 hard computers and you risk an war and also you cant get your armies on time bcoz of other's castle cooldown).May not apply to computer players only rare by chance if game scenario request this.Barnabas will give you quests too.
5.Place of Pilgrimage = Benedicta will pray all the time and in exchange of constant bread delivery can get you honour.(very useful at patricians level when you have access to bread building and access to her, start immediatly to deliver bread .She will boost your honour points needed to buy special items or ships helps in war later).May apply very well to computer players too (tested on a hard CP) which can boost his/her honour and of corse it helps on buildings,ships upgrades if the CP will have access to attainments.Benedicta will give you quests too.
6.Alchemist Tower Slot = Izmir will create new goods from some other goods requested by him using his alchemical knowledge .(very useful all the time).Not sure if it's effect apply to CP or not.Izmir will give you quests too.
7.Assassin's Fortress = Al Rashid will provide extra military units for some money and goods.(very useful if you are in war and u need a greast,fast and destructive support for your other normal armies).May not apply to CP ,never saw a assassin unit generated by CP's island yet.Al Rashid have a quests amount for you.
8.Caravanserai = Karim's caravan camels can get you oriental goods and tools for money.(very useful all the time with extra tools,mosaic helping you to start/build faster and not waiting your tool production).May not apply to CP not sure.Karim give quests too.
9.Academy of Wisdom = Ibn al Hakim can create for you ,common,rare or very rare items if you can provide constantly, milk and dates.The items are randomly created and quality/types depends also on your civilization level.(very useful as excavation site all the time).Hakim will give you quests too.

Note:I recommend to add only the occidental third party slot to occidental area and same thing for oriental third party slots for oriental area for a normal and proper work of game engine. Feel free to test oriental neutral powers to occidental area or islands and if you add more 1 slot per each neutral power you do it on your own risk, game may not work normal if ,for example you have 2 place of pilgrimage added in game/map.
By double-clicking on an icon from a resource island opens a dialogue in which both type as well as the quantity of the resource can be set.
Resource Type = the resource may be selected.
Refill Min = the minimum amount of the resource will be filled at the point of replenishing
Refill Max = is the maximum amount of refil a resource can be given, the replenishment of a resource is a random amount between the minimum and maximum amounts.
Note:Resources for Stone, Quartz and Fur work in the same principle but are/have other options.
Refilling in game is usually set to max, according to your money too and refilling partially may not work or removed with newest patches ,so important is the maximum amount.

I have a question about once the maps are done. I know the new map can be placed in the scenario folder but what about the random map? You can give it a map number, but where do you copy the file to?
You mean the random map you created with the WE?
It's the same thing, you have to save the map too and copy it to the scenario folder.

While I've got a good idea of how to go about making a map, I still have one question. Is there any way to use the player scenario map I create with worldeditor in a continuous game (where I can tweak certain things depending on how I want to play)?

That's possible with tool one, but it's also possible to add the map with a number, which you can enter when you start a continious game.
But I don't know how.
